Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). For imperial, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide by your height in inches squared.
What BMI is considered healthy?
For most adults, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25–29.9 is overweight; 30+ is obese.
Is BMI accurate for muscular or athletic people?
No. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes and very muscular individuals often read as overweight or obese despite being healthy. Use our Athlete BMI tool or a body-fat measurement for a clearer picture.
Does BMI differ for men and women?
The formula is the same, but body composition differs. Women typically have more essential fat. Use our Women-specific calculator for context.
Is my data private?
