Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about BMI, our calculators, and how Helthvibe works.

What is BMI and how is it calculated? Basics

BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. For imperial units: (weight in pounds × 703) ÷ (height in inches)².

Is BMI accurate in 2026? Accuracy

BMI is a useful population-level screening tool but has limitations. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, and can misclassify athletes, the elderly, and some ethnic groups. For those groups, body-fat percentage or a clinician’s assessment is more accurate.

What is a healthy BMI range? Ranges

For most adults, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, 30+ is obese. Asian populations often use 18.5–22.9 as healthy.

Does BMI work the same for men and women? Demographics

The formula is the same. Body composition differs — women typically have higher essential fat. Our Women-specific calculator provides more context.

Why do Asian BMI thresholds differ? Demographics

Research shows Asian populations face elevated health risks at lower BMI. The WHO recommends 18.5–22.9 healthy, 23–27.5 overweight, 27.5+ obese.

Is BMI useful for athletes? Demographics

BMI can overstate "overweight" or "obese" in muscular individuals. Try our Athlete BMI calculator for added context.

How often should I check my BMI? Usage

Every few months is plenty for most adults. Daily weight fluctuates from water, food, and other factors.

Can I lower my BMI safely? Usage

Yes — through sustainable changes to diet and physical activity. Avoid crash diets. See our practical guide.

Do you store my height and weight? Privacy

No. All calculations run 100% client-side in your browser. We never see, store, or transmit your data.
